Il aura fallu attendre que le petit écran se penche sur le personnage d’Hannibal Lecter pour enfin offrir un prequel digne de ce nom au terrifiant «Silence des Agneaux» de Johnattan Demme…
À l’origine de cette série, on retrouve Bryan Fuller, créateur de l’originale série «Pushing Daisies», et Thomas Harris, l’auteur de la célébrissime tétralogie écrite autour du personnage d’Hannibal Lecter dont la série est adaptée…
Pour situer au mieux l’action auprès des fans de cette saga, la série est basée sur le début du roman «Dragon Rouge»…
Afin de mettre la main sur un tueur en série cannibale, le FBI en la personne de Jack Crawford décide de recruter Will Graham, un profiler de grand talent. Ce dernier possède une grande capacité d’empathie lui permettant de se glisser dans la peau des psychopathes qu’il traque. Ainsi il arrive à comprendre leurs mobiles et leurs modes opératoires mieux que n’importe qui. Cependant ce don et cette fascination qu’il entretient pour les tueurs en série, en font également quelqu’un de fragile et d’instable. Pour cette raison, le FBI décide de le faire suivre en parallèle par un psychiatre de renom, le très élégant et très raffiné Hannibal Lecter… Mais très vite on se rend compte que derrière ce brillant analyste et ce fin gourmet au talent culinaire indiscutable, se cache un sociopathe, manipulateur et cannibale… celui que tout Baltimore recherche !
Tout d’abord, ce qui frappe quand on regarde cette série, c’est le traitement et le soin qui lui sont apportés. La mise en scène est précise et élégante. La bande son envoutante, les décors et les costumes extrêmement léchés. Tout est mis en oeuvre pour offrir un parfait terrain de jeu aux comédiens. Et sur ce point le casting n’est pas en reste. Mads Mikkelsen y interprète un Hannibal Lecter tout en finesse et en subtilité. On se délecte de le voir manipuler son entourage de son intelligence supérieure. A ces côtés, Hugh Dancy, jusqu’ici réservé à des rôles d’anonymes, entre enfin dans la lumière sous les traits de Will Graham. Il joue à la perfection son rôle d’enquêteur brillant et intuitif avant de sombrer peu à peu dans la folie… On prend un plaisir coupable à le voir se consumer lentement à mesures qu’il se rapproche des ténèbres de l’humanité…
Peut on sortir réellement indemne d’une telle descente aux enfers ?
C’est toute la question que pose cette série… Et la réponse est à la hauteur. Elle nous offre un «season final» excellentissime. Peut-être même un des meilleurs que j’ai eu la chance de voir. A lui seul il justifie le visionnage de tout le reste… Vivement la saison 2 !
Alors si vous aimez plonger dans la noirceur de l’âme humaine, n’hésitez plus… Profitez de la sortie en DVD de l’intégrale de cette première saison. La seule mise en garde que je ferai… Ne prévoyez pas de passer à table tout de suite après… Les crimes toujours plus inventifs dans l’horreur qu’ils génèrent pourraient vous couper l’appétit !…

It has been necessary to wait for the small screen to get interested in Hannibal Lector as a character, to get a worthwhile prequel to the terrifying « Silence of the Lambs », by Jonathan Demme…
Behind this series you have Bryan Fuller, creator of the original series « Pushing Daisies », and Thomas Harris, author of the celebrated tetralogy around the character of Hannibal Lector from whom the series is adapted…
So that the fans of this saga grasp what the series is really about, the series is based on the beginning of the novel « Red Dragon »…
In order to get its hands on a cannibal serial killer, the FBI, represented by Jack Crawford, decides to hire Will Graham, a very talented profiler. He has a great capacity of empathy enabling him to slip into the skin, so to say, of the killers he is tracking down. He thus manages to grasp their motives and their modus operandi better than anyone else. But this gift and the fascination he has for serial killers also make him somewhat fragile and unstable. For this reason, the FBI decide to team him up with a renowned psychiatrist, the very elegant and refined Hannibal Lector…
But very quickly we realize that behind this brilliant analyst and this fine gourmet gifted with an undisputed culinary talent, hides a manipulative and cannibalistic sociopath… The very one all of Baltimore is looking for !
The most striking element in the series is the treatment and care with which it has been made. The direction is precise and elegant. The soundtrack is bewitching, the sets and costumes very elaborated. Everything has been chosen to offer the actors an ideal setting in which to perform. And the casting is also top notch. Mads Mikkleson is an utmost subtle and refined Hannibal Lector. We just gloat when seeing how he manipulates his circle with his superior intelligence. Next to him, Hugh Dancy, till now stuck with anonymous roles, gets finally into the highlight as Will Graham.
He plays perfectly the part of the brilliant and intuitive investigator before slowly sinking into a state of madness … We feel a guilty pleasure watching him burn up and burn out as, little by little, he enters the dark sides of humanity…
Can one really escape unscathed from such a descent into hell ?
This is what the series is really all about … And the answer won’t disappoint you. It offers us a high quality « seasonal final ». Perhaps even the best I have been fortunate to see. Just this episode makes it a must to see the rest … I just can’t wait for season 2 !
So if you like to go deep down into the blackness of the human soul, don’t hesitate… Take advantage of the first season and complete series out in DVD. The only warning I might give you… Don’t plan on eating just after viewing it… The most inventive crimes in the horrific aspect they generate, might just have you lose your appetite…
