Festival de Cannes – Une Sélection Excitante
Quatre films sous la bannière française
Faisant taire les pronostics qui foisonnaient à gogo, Thierry Frémaux, délégué général du Festival de Cannes, a dévoilé le 18 avril, les 19 films retenus sur les 1858 soumis au comité de sélection. Une ouverture toute en paillettes avec Gatsby le magnifique pour lequel Baz Luhrmann a vu grand, en 3D ! Leonardo DiCaprio y incarne le millionnaire des années folles avec alcool, femmes et jazz. Au générique aussi Carrey Mulligan et Tobey Maguire, cela promet une montée des marches qui fera le buzz.
Pour la clôture Zulu, du Français Jérôme Salle qui, après Largo Winch, s’est lancé dans un projet ambitieux en Afrique du Sud, avec Forest Whitaker et Orlando Bloom.

Tourné par Arnaud Desplechin dans les plaines du Montana, Jimmy P. est l’adaptation d’un cas de l’ethnopsychiatre Georges Devereux sur un Amérindien névrosé et son psy (Benicio Del Toro et Mathieu Amalric). Michael Kohlhaas d’Arnaud Pallières, d’après Kleist, est un film en costumes dans la France du XVI° siècle. François Ozon présente Jeune et jolie, un film hot, sur l’éveil à la sexualité d’une ado de 17 ans.
Très chaud aussi, La Vie d’Adèle sur la passion entre deux jeunes femmes tourné par Abdellatif Kechiche. Pour son retour sur La Croisette, Roman Polanski présente, en tant que Polonais, La Vénus à la fourrure, l’adaptation d’un classique de la littérature érotique, avec Emmanuelle Seigner et Mathieu Amalric.
Représentant l’Italie dont elle est originaire, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, seule femme en compétition, racontera son enfance dans Un château en Italie. Autre film italien, La Grande Bellezza que Paolo Sorrentino a tourné dans les rues de Rome.
De nombreux Américains : Behind the Candelabra/Ma vie avec Liberace de Steven Soderbergh : la biopic d’une star ultra kitsch incarné par Michael Douglas. The Immigrant, le nouveau James Gray avec Marion Cotillard interprétant une émigrée polonaise qui arrive à New York. Thème favori d’Alexander Payne, Nebraska est un road movie conflictuel entre un père et son fils tourné dans son pays natal. Les frères Coen ont réalisé Inside Llewyn Davis, dans une ambiance folk du New York des sixties.
Film très attendu, après l’effet sensation de Drive au Festival il y a deux ans, Only God Forgives, où Nicolas Winding Refn retrouve Ryan Gosling pour une violente vengeance à Bangkok. Borgman du Hollandais Alex Van Warmerdam expert en humour décalé. L’Iranien Asghar Farhadi (Une séparation) a tourné en France, Le Passé est un thriller autour d’un divorce avec Bérénice Bejo. Mexicain né à Barcelone, Amat Escalante (Los Bastardos) présente Heli, prénom de son héroïne à la recherche de son père dans une ville mexicaine. Un seul film africain, Grigris du Tchadien Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, dont nous avions tant aimé Daratt et Un homme qui crie.
Côté Asie : dans A Touch of Sin, un film en quatre histoires, Jia Zhangke poursuit sa vision douce-amère de la Chine actuelle, déjà commencée avec Xiao, artisan Pickpocket, Platform et World.. Du Japonais Hirokazu Kore-Eda (Nobody knows, primé en 2004), Like Father, Like Son, sur une implosion familiale quand un homme apprend que son fils a été échangé par erreur à la maternité. Toujours du Japon, un polar violent de Takashi Miike, Shield of Straw. Et maintenant au Jury, présidé par Steven Spielberg, de faire son choix !

Putting en end to the rumours about which films would be part of the selection, Thierry Frémaux, general delegate to the Cannes Film Festival, disclosed on April 18th, the 19 films selected among the 1858 submitted to the selection comity. A glittering opening with » The Great Gatsby » for which Baz Lughrmann has grand designs, in 3D: Leonardo Di Caprio plays the lead role of the roaring twenties millionaire, with booze, women and jazz. Carrey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire are also part of the cast,which means their walking up the stairs of the festival palace will be making a buzz.
For the closing there is Zulu, from French director Jerôme Salle who, after Largo Winch, undertook an ambitious project in South Africa, with Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom

François Ozon presents Jeune et Jolie (Young and Beautiful), a sizzling movie on the sexual coming of age of a 17 year old teenager. Also very hot, La Vie d’Adèle (Adele’s Life) about the shared passion between two young women, filmed by Abdelatif Kechiche. For his comeback at the festival, Roman Polanski is presenting, as a Polish director, La Vénus à la fourrure (The Venus in furs), adapted from a famous erotic opus, with Emmanuelle Seigner and Mathieu Amalric. Representing Italy, where she was born, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, the only woman part of the selection, will tell of her childhood in Un château en Italie (A castle in Italy). Another Italian film, La grande Bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino was filmed in the streets of Rome.
Several American movies: Behind the candelabra/ My Life with Liberace by Steven Soderbergh: the biopic of an ultra kitsch played by Michael Douglas. Last minute space in competition found for Jim Jarmush’s film « Only Lovers Left Alive », a vampire love story with Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddletson, Mia Wasikowska, and John Hurt.A film that has been long-awaited, after the sensation brought on by Drive at the festival two years ago, Only God Forgives, where Nicolas Winding Rein sides once again with Ryan Gosling for a violent revenge in Bangkok. Borgman by the Dutch Alex Van Warmerdam, an expert in offbeat humour. The Iranian Asghar Farhadi (A separation) was filmed in France. The Past is a thriller set around a divorce case with Berenice Bejo.
